How to Present a Design: Presentation Perfection
Presentation is everything. The way in which a design is presented to a client can influence not only how a client receives the design but also your skill as a designer. Turn yourself from amateur to pro by crafting an experience around your design presentation. In this small section of Fundamentals of Design we will cover how to present designs to clients.
Mockups are Essential
Mockups are an essential component to showcasing a new design. We have an article coming soon about creating the perfect mockup.

Go Beyond the Mockup
Mockups are great, but they’re not the be all and end all. While many mockups can be created online in minutes, mockups are only a piece of the puzzle. How you present these mockups is the real solution.
Create an Experience
Clients wish to be “wowed” and doing this in a creative way is a surefire way to retain the business even if they hate everything being designed. They wish to feel special, and that all the time spent was used effectively. So how do you craft an individual experience quickly?

Examine the Client
In order to quickly create a “new” experience relative to the client I find it is often good to look at the original brief. See what uses the client was intending for the design and build an experience similar to that. If that is not possible, come up with a clean and innovative way to wow them. Examine their tastes and cater to them.

Examine the Design
What is the ideal way you wish for the world to see your design? Whatever the best attributes of the design need to be considered when building out the experience. Give the design the best chance it has at being successful.

Present the Finished Product
Oftentimes prospective designs will be put on samples so that clients can touch and feel the designs. If you’re meeting digitally, maybe use video showing someone interacting with the design. It’s these little 5 minute items that can truly wow a client. Keep the presentation short and relevant and you’re sure to find success.

Conclusion
Presenting an idea beyond just some text or a logo on a white background with nothing else is paramount to retaining clients and generating positive buzz. Substance does matter but it’s often how you present said substance that determines perception. Showcase the positives and reinforce the reasons why the client chose you to design for their brand, after all this could be the last time to leave a positive impression.
