Pantone Color of the Year 2023 Viva Magenta
2023 is well underway, and trends have already begun to be established, especially in regards to color. One such company specializing in color is Pantone, who has been naming a color of the year for over 20 years. Pantone specializes in color trends, especially in the realm of fashion and goods. This year PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta has been chosen as the color of the year.
PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta
According to PANTONE, 18-1750 Viva Magenta is all about “fearless strength”. Focusing on paving the way to new horizons, this color tone provides a bold flavor in response to the pale and generic neutrals that have dominated the design world.
What is Viva Magenta?
Viva Magenta is a color hailing from the red family on the wheel and thus exudes a warm feel. It is supposedly inspired by the cochineal beetle with its carmine dye as well as the metaverse and digital art. This mixture is what breathes life into this color.
Color Combinations and Harmonies
Viva Magenta was launched with a campaign entitled “Welcome to the Magentaverse”, with a list of colors shown on the website. These colors include Pale Dogwood, Gray Sand, Gray Lilac, etc. which do not embrace the spirit of Viva Magenta, but rather give the magenta color the room to breathe.
Viva Magenta is an interesting choice, and one that I feel is almost a step backwards. Magentas and pinks in design have been a bit of a fad, even back in 2022 and this feels like no exception. Sure it is an appealing color visually speaking, but it’s not anything special in which there is going to be a long-lasting impact. Sure, it is true that neutrals have been dominating the design space and the tone is exciting but I just can’t help but feel that the color is limited by its practicality over its idea even though I do agree on the premise.
