Blend Modes Part 5 | Photoshop Tutorials 101
Overview
The tutorial for this week explains two blend mode groups. The Inverse group as well as the Cancelation modes looks for similarities and uses different methods to create different effects on the image.
Difference
The Difference blending mode takes the color with the highest brightness and subtracts from the layer with the darker color. i.e. Base Color minus Blend Color if the base color is brighter. The use of white on the blending color will create an inversion in base colors. The use of black will create no change in colors or values.
Exclusion
The Exclusion blend mode gives a similar effect to the Difference blend mode, however the effect is lower in contrast.
Subtract
The Subtract blending mode takes the base layer’s pixel value and subtracts the pixel value of the blending layer. Black on the blending layer creates no change. White will cause black, as well as pixels with similar colors on both layers.
Divide
The Divide blending mode takes the base layer’s pixel value and divides the pixel value of the blending layer. White on the blending layer creates no change as well as pixels with similar colors on both layers. Black on the blend layer will stay black. This blend mode usually results in a boost in highlights on the overall image.
