Concentric Shape Repeater | Adobe After Effects Tutorial
With the release of Adobe After Effects 17.1 in May 2020 Adobe released a new feature labeled the Concentric Shape Repeater. This feature creates new parameters within the shape effect Offset Paths to create copies of the path. These paths can radiate both inward and outward and give more options to animation designers.
The Problem
Originally if you wanted to repeat shapes concentrically you would have to create individual layers and repeat them and hand keyframe every single one. Now that is nothing but a thing of the past.
The Solution
Creating concentric duplicates of shapes and geometric patterns is now easier than ever. Utilizing the Offset Paths shape effect we can gain access to the new parameters
- Copies
- Copy Offset
1. Create Shapes
First create your shape layer that you wish to make copies of.
2. Enable Offset Paths
Second expand the shape layer and on the right of contents select Add > Offset Paths
3. Offset Paths Options
This will open a new option below the shapes labeled Offset Paths. Expanding this out opens up five options. Utilize keyframes on all of these in order to create unique animations.
- Amount: Adjusts the amount of offset to the repetitions. Positive numbers lead the animation outward with negative numbers forcing the offset inward.
- Line Join: Specifies the connection appearance from squared off (bevel), round, and pointed (miter).
- Miter Limit: According to Adobe, a miter limit “determines the conditions under which a beveled join is used instead of a miter join. If the miter limit is 4, then when the length of the point reaches four times the stroke weight, a bevel join is used instead. A miter limit of 1 causes a bevel join.”
- Copies: Determines how many copies of the path are made.
- Copy Offset: Adobe lists copies offset as “moves the shapes outward or inward. This enables you to create interesting backgrounds such as with a retro vibe. You can also create concentric copies to generate geometric textures, kaleidoscopic effect, and patterns. You can also create mandala designs, motion posters, and animate letters. If the letter copies tend to merge into each other, try reducing the stroke width.
Conclusion
Concentric shape repeater is not a crazy new feature, but is a nice timesaver. In the spring update Adobe After Effects also added Tapered Shape Strokes as well as some other features that bare mention. These features include ProRes RAW import support, system default audio option in macOS, as well as Team Projects getting cloud collaboration and copying media to a shared location.
