Style Transfer Neural Filter | Adobe Photoshop Tutorial
With the release of Adobe Photoshop 22.0 in October 2020 Adobe shipped the Style Transfer neural filter. This allows you to select an image and apply that style to any image you wish. For example, let’s say you wanted your photo to be in the vein of Van Gogh’s Starry Night. Now that is nothing more than a few button clicks away from reality, well kinda.
How to Use Style Transfer
Style Transfer can be accessed via the following steps.
1. Open the Source Image
Open a Photoshop document and select an image to be the source.

2. Open Neural Filters Panel
Go up to the top and select Filter > Neural Filters

3. Select Style Transfer
The Neural Filters panel will load on the right side of Photoshop. Select Style Transfer from the list of currently two filters.

4. Select the Style
From the tiled list of options select a style to morph the source image into.

5. Adjust Options
The list of options and then intricacies of what they do are covered further on the page due to the variance in customization options.

6. Select Output Method
Select from the dropdown list of options for output method.

Controls
Preserve Color
A simple checkbox that selects whether the image keeps its original colors or adapt the colors of the selected style

Focus Subject
Another checkbox which determines whether the subject takes on the style selected.

Style Strength
A slider ranging from 1-100 on how prominent the style is transferred onto the source image.

Brush Size
Brush size is another slider that dictates how big the details of the transfer are onto the source image, and in a way determines how detailed the style transfer is.

Blur Background
Another checkbox with a slider which allows for the option of blurring the background out behind the subject. The amount of blur is determined on a 0-100 percent scale.

Conclusion
Style Transfer is a nice idea in concept, however it is not flawless in its execution. This reminds me of the filter gallery already present within Photoshop with some added tweaking options. Not really for me and my style but who knows, with time this could become a mainstay in place of the filter gallery however that is doubtful in my opinion without a few updates.
